This tarantula lives in Central America from Honduras to Costa Rica. It is an ambush predator preying on insects and small vertebrates. Its hairy legs are sensitive to smell, taste and vibrations and are used to detect its prey. It then grabs its prey with its front legs and injects the victim with venom from its two hollow fangs. The venom both paralyses its prey and also starts the digestive process, liquefying its insides for the tarantula to suck up later. Usually quite a docile tarantula, when threatened it will kick hairs off its abdomen with its hind-legs, which can cause blindness to a predator’s eyes or an unpleasant rash to the skin.
