Pig-naming competition winners:

Mangalitza Pigs named Si and Dave  after television’s ‘Hairy Bikers’

Emily Hoare from Brighton (far right) and family pictured with  Si and Dave outside the pig sty ‘Mangalitza Manor’.

Emily won a year’s family ticket to the Rare Breeds Centre.

“The curly haired pigs reminded me of the hairy bikers who I love. My partner Richard, nephew Mitchell and niece Bethany all had a fabulous day out. We were thrilled to get to see Si and Dave’s new piglets and loved the children’s barn and play areas.”

Did you know

the Rare Breeds Centre

is a charity?

If you are a UK taxpayer and you make a donation that is 10% more than the admission price, the government will give us 25p for every £1 of your entrance fee. This is called a gift aid visit and it makes a massive difference to attractions like the Rare Breeds Centre. It helps us with the work we do at the Canterbury Oast Trust to support people with learning disabilities who are in our care.

Click our big green button if you want to book for an ordinary admission ticket or for a special event.

Luna Report

Luna, the Jersey calf our latest arrival was born on October 4th 2011. She is thriving. Luna would love to meet you in the children's barn, her new home which she shares with piglets, pygmy goats, hamsters, chickens, two alpacas and other animals.

During her first months, Luna drank six large bottles of milk a day. She has been eating solids for some time. Luna was named after popular girls' names for those born at the time of Halloween.

Luna replaces the beloved Chestnut the Jersey cow who died after a short illness. Chestnut lived a long and happy life at the Rare Breeds Centre.

Denise Van Outen's surprise visit to Rare Breeds Centre

Denise Van Outen visited the Rare Breeds Centre during the Autumn half term 2011 with her daughter Betsy. "I had not been to the centre before and did not know about the Canterbury Oast Trust," said Denise. "We had a really great time, and I particularly loved meeting the ginger haired goat. I have nicknamed him 'Chris' after someone I know."
