COT Dog Show

South of England Rare Breeds Centre

Fun Family Dog Show
Our Canine Capers on the 26th September were a great success.

Autumn blew in for the Canterbury Oast Trust's dog show at the Rare Breeds Centre but plenty of activities and a large dose of laughter kept everybody warm.

With generous prizes donated by our sponsors, Purina, and a chance to put dogs through their paces on an agility course, the arena was full of pets.

There were two show rings with 10 classes each, which kept the judges busy. The largest class of the day was Most Handsome, which was won by Kursom, a large standard poodle, but all classes were well attended and the judges said they had a difficult job as the standard was very high.

Their choices for special prizes were Stanley (first in Waggiest Tail) with handler Louise Baraclough and owner Claire Dinton in Ring 1; and Willow (first in Best Rescued/Rehomed) with handler and owner Leilah Horlock in Ring 2.

But there was also plenty of fun. Imaginations ran riot for the fancy dress parade in which Macey made off with the treasure dressed as a pirate and the dogs obviously lapped up the sausage eating contest.

The Sausage Eating Contest was a close finish, with Bryn woofing them down in 5.25 seconds, but the contest almost came to an abrupt end when one of the enthusiastic competitors jumped up, grabbed the whole pack of sausages and ran off!

The show raised about £2,100. It was sponsored by Purina, which very generously provided the bags of dog food for the winners and a very large stuffed puppy for the guess the name competition.

Purina also provided many prizes for the raffle and tombola and organised a Pet Agility Show that was run by Linda and Adrian Croxford of Pet Lodge Kennels based in Whitstable.

Visitors were able to put their pets through their paces and all money raised was again kindly donated to the Canterbury Oast Trust.

KM donated a P&O Dover to Calais crossing of a car and up to nine people which was raffled to raise money.

Thanks also to our many visitors, including those who made a long trip to join us, such as the Larsen family from London and Caroline Loughman from Hampshire.

Residents from our own Rosemary Cottage had a tambola stand and raised £130, which was an excellent day's work.

The Trust would like to say a big thank you to Purina, Dog World, KM and all other sponsors and volunteers, who made the event possible and have us looking forward to more canine capers next year.
