Native to North America, they can be found in grasslands, ditches, pastures and prairies. They can grow to lengths of up to 93-120cm (37-47”). The King snake is a non-venomous, opportunistic carnivore - feeding on rodents, lizards, eggs and even venomous snakes, killing prey by constriction. They often mimic other snakes and have colouration and patterns similar to the venomous coral snake which can lead to confusion. There are rhymes to help distinguish between them “Red and yellow kills a fellow. Red and Black are safe for Jack.”
