The breed as we know it has uncertain origins. It does not hail from Poland and may have been come from the Netherlands. The breed is known for its magnificent hairstyle with a bushy crest of feathers and a protuberance on the top of the skull. Originally egg layers they are now mainly bred for show. There are many different varieties –white crested Blacks, Chamois, Sliver Laces Frizzle and more. They are a beautiful, tame bird but are classed as a ‘non-sitting’ bird and only occasionally become broody. If they lay they produce white eggs. They have a thin skull and can suffer from the cold quite badly.
